I suggest modifying point 9. Secular education understands the inadequacy of pure behaviorism and actually promotes relational authority (Fay, 2002, 9 Essential Skills for the Love and Logic Classroom). The most widely used system for "behavior management" and character education is Positive Behavior Intervention Systems (PBIS; www.pbis.org) which emphasizes that having a relationship with children is more effective at maintaining a positive learning environment than external rewards alone. However, I see a difference in an understanding of authority, especially if humanistic education is basing itself on a constructivist philosophy of education, where students build their own knowledge and the teacher is not an authority but a guide.

I have a hard time believing that what you have been writing these last four posts is merely intellectual exercise, but is an honest disclosure of God's heart for education and call a call to repentance for Christian schools. Now, if these ideas are, as St. Anselm may have said, greater in reality than to exist solely in the mind, what is the next move? Where do we go from here?

Comment on Educational Integration by Harold Klassen

Changing the "direction" of integration makes a radical difference. I spent a lot of years trying to fit the Bible into the classes I taught and the the results were always unsatisfactory. The verses I used didn't fit well or were missing entirely. God and His ways are far too big to fit in the confines of any curriculum. However, when I realized the importance of fitting all the different parts of God's world that we were studying into the big picture of what God is doing, things began to make sense.
I've not considered changing the name of the process, but the direction of integration certainly needs changing. I've collected resources for teachers at www.transformingteachers.org including the Visual Valet which gives some assistance to anyone--student or teacher--that seeks to think Christianly and bring God's world and God's Word together in a mind and life-changing way.

I told the 5th grade today, better to get a 'B' through prayer... heck better to get a 'C' through prayer than grasping for an 'A'. We were talking about Philippians 2:6. The entire class tilted their heads and looked at me like a dog does when it hears a funny sound. Then, I told them, if you're getting a 'D' or 'F' and praying through your homework... it could be God is telling to go to your teachers for help. I also asked for their forgiveness too, because sometimes as teachers we give the impression that an 'A' is a sign of worth or value. I think heard an audible sigh of relief after that comment also. I really like messing with students' minds sometimes, hehe.

Let's see if I can do this right...
Ahem.
Well said you maundering Scottsman!

Mac

P.S. Seriously, I think your writing has direction which is helpful and constructive to the mind. And I believe PC thrives because of the teasing... it teaches one to take ones self less seriously.
